Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Checklist

Use this AI search optimization checklist to improve your content, build brand credibility, and fix technical issues so you can get found in AI answers.

Getting found in AI search takes more than publishing a well-written article. Your pages need to answer the right questions, your brand needs credible support beyond your website, and search systems need to access your content.

This checklist covers those three areas: on-page, off-page, and technical optimization. It gives you 12 AI search visibility checks to focus your effort, with a practical way to act on each category inside ZeroRank.

AEO checklist

1. On-page checklist

Create or improve the pages your buyers need

Before adding another article to your calendar, check what the AI answers already use. A buying question may call for a comparison. A question about an integration may need a product page or documentation.

  • Create a page for an unanswered buyer question. Choose the format that fits: comparison, alternatives, listicle, use-case, or product page.
  • Add missing buying details to existing pages. Check cited competitors’ pages for relevant pricing, features, limitations, and integrations your content does not explain.
  • Move each section’s main answer directly below its heading. Put supporting explanations and examples after it.
  • Support key claims with evidence. Add a relevant screenshot, customer example, expert quote, or link to the original source.

How ZeroRank helps

ZeroRank’s On-page Recommendations identify content opportunities using your tracked prompts (opens in a new tab) and the sources appearing in AI answers.

The recommended page types can include listicles, comparisons, alternatives, and product pages.

On page recommendations

That gives your content plan a specific purpose: cover the information missing from the answers you want to appear in.

Then choose the appropriate workflow:

Content creation helps when the page does not exist. Generate a brief, review its scope, and create a draft using templates.

Content optimization helps when you already have a relevant page. Add the content to receive an AEO score and suggested improvements.

💡Tip: For example, if you are missing from agency-focused comparison prompts, prioritize a page that explains client management, reporting, and pricing for agencies. Another general “what is this software?” article would leave those buying questions unanswered.

2. Off-page checklist

Prioritize the sources shaping recommendations

An accurate product page explains what you offer. Independent coverage gives buyers another perspective on whether to trust it.

Kasra Dash from The Masterminders (opens in a new tab) describes the gap in our survey:

Lots of businesses rank really well in SEO but show up nowhere in AI results. It usually comes down to off-page signals and what people are saying about the brand across the web.

Choose off-page work based on the sources influencing your target answers and the evidence those answers need.

  • Contact relevant publishers whose cited lists include competitors but not your brand. Explain why your product fits and provide evidence for inclusion.
  • Update your profiles on relevant review sites and directories. Correct the description, features, pricing, and website link.
  • Ask customers to review your product on the platforms appearing in your target answers. Encourage them to describe their actual use case and experience.
  • Answer a relevant question in a cited Reddit or forum discussion. Offer practical help and disclose your affiliation if mentioning your product.

How ZeroRank helps

ZeroRank’s Off-page Recommendations surface specific opportunities, including editorial comparisons, blog roundups, Reddit discussions, and forum threads. You can work from relevant URLs instead of starting with a generic outreach list.

off page recommendations

Prioritize by buyer relevance, repeated citation, and your ability to add something useful. These are practical selection criteria, not a promise that every brand mention (opens in a new tab) will produce AI visibility.

If comparison articles repeatedly support the recommendations for your category, pitch inclusion with evidence of product fit. If customer experiences dominate the cited sources, focus on honest reviews and useful participation in those discussions. An unrelated mention on a large website may do less to address that particular gap.

Keep the task concrete: contribute to this discussion, correct this description, or approach this publisher with a specific reason your product belongs.

3. Technical checklist

Remove the barriers to discovery and use

Technical problems can prevent good content from being considered at all. Fix those blockers before spending time polishing a page that search systems cannot retrieve.

  • Remove unintended access and indexing blocks from priority pages. Check robots.txt, noindex tags, and firewall rules.
  • Put essential answers in accessible page text. Make information currently available only in images, downloads, or behind a login readable on the public page.
  • Add missing discovery links. Include priority pages in your XML sitemap and link to them from relevant pages on your site.
  • Fix structured-data errors on priority pages. Validate existing markup and correct values that disagree with the visible content.

Google says (opens in a new tab) pages supporting AI Overviews and AI Mode must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. It does not require special AI schema or new machine-readable files.

How ZeroRank helps

ZeroRank’s Technical Recommendations highlight potential improvements such as missing schema, page-speed issues, and weak structural or trust signals. Its readiness assessment helps you review that foundation.

Turn recommendations into completed work

Use ZeroRank Copilot to help work through the recommendations you select. Give it a specific task, such as improving a comparison page around missing buying criteria, rather than asking it to “optimize everything.”

Copilot

If you work in an assistant such as Claude or Cursor, ZeroRank’s MCP connection brings your prompts, answers, cited sources, and rankings into that workflow. The assistant can use that context while helping implement content or code changes through its connected editing tools. ZeroRank’s MCP access itself is both read and write.

Ultimately, there’s no checklist-guarantee inclusion. But a focused cycle of recommendations, implementation, and measurement gives you a clear basis for deciding what to do next.

Everything you're wondering

Or ask us anything at hello@zerorank.ai

How does ZeroRank know what AI says about my brand?

We run your prompts against the live models every day and read the answers back — the text, the sources cited, and the tone. Nothing is inferred from search rankings or modelled from proxies.

Isn't this just SEO with a new name?

No. Traditional SEO optimizes for a list of links. AI search returns a shortlist and a reason, built from prompts, citations and sentiment. Different signals, different data model. We built for that from the start rather than adding a tab to a ranking tool.

Which AI platforms do you track?

ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Grok. New engines are added as they reach meaningful traffic, and your plan price doesn't change when they are.

What makes this different from the enterprise platforms?

Scope and price. The suites bolt AI visibility onto a legacy SEO product and charge per seat. ZeroRank does one job, and every plan has unlimited seats.

Can't I just ask ChatGPT myself?

You can, once. Answers shift with phrasing, session and day, so a single check tells you very little. We sample the same prompts repeatedly and show you the pattern.

How long before I see results?

You'll see where you stand in about 30 seconds. Moving the number takes longer — most teams earn their first new citations inside four to six weeks.

Can I use this for client work?

Yes. Unlimited seats means clients sit in the workspace at no extra cost, and reports export white-labelled.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Run a full report on your domain before you enter a card.
